A dishwasher that doesn't clean is one of the most frustrating appliance problems. You run the cycle, unload the machine, and still have to hand-wash half the dishes. Larry Bezman has repaired hundreds of dishwashers across Simi Valley and Ventura County — here's what he usually finds.
Why Your Dishwasher Isn't Cleaning
1. Clogged or blocked spray arms
The spray arms rotate and shoot water onto your dishes. If the small holes are clogged with mineral deposits or food particles, water pressure drops and cleaning suffers. Remove the spray arms and rinse them under the faucet — you can usually clear the holes with a toothpick.
2. Faulty water inlet valve
If your dishwasher isn't filling with enough hot water, dishes won't get clean regardless of the detergent. The water inlet valve controls water flow into the machine. When it partially fails, the dishwasher runs without adequate water. This is a repair that requires a technician.
3. Detergent dispenser not opening
If the detergent pod or powder isn't being released during the wash cycle, your dishes are getting rinsed but not cleaned. Check that nothing is blocking the dispenser door from opening.
4. Water temperature too low
Dishwashers need water at 120°F to properly dissolve detergent and clean dishes. If your water heater is set too low, or if the dishwasher's heating element has failed, cleaning performance drops significantly.
5. Overloaded or incorrectly loaded
Too many dishes, or dishes blocking the spray arms, prevents proper water distribution. Make sure nothing is hanging below the bottom rack that could block the lower spray arm from rotating.
