Why Is My Dryer Not Heating? Most Common Causes

Dryer not heating - common causes and fixes

Your dryer runs through a full cycle but the clothes come out damp. The drum is spinning, the machine is making noise — but there's no heat. This is one of the most common calls Larry gets across Simi Valley and Ventura County. The good news: it's usually a straightforward, affordable fix.

Why Your Dryer Has No Heat

1. Blown thermal fuse (most common)

The thermal fuse is a safety device that cuts power to the heating element if the dryer overheats. Once blown, it doesn't reset — you need to replace it. This is typically the most common cause of a dryer with no heat, and it's one of the least expensive repairs. Larry carries thermal fuses for most major brands.

2. Failed heating element (electric dryers)

Electric dryers use a coiled heating element to produce heat. Over time, this element can break. When it does, the dryer runs but produces no heat at all. Replacement is straightforward and cost-effective on most machines.

3. Bad gas igniter (gas dryers)

Gas dryers use an igniter to light the gas burner. When the igniter fails, the gas never lights and you get no heat. This is the gas dryer equivalent of the electric heating element — a common, fixable problem.

4. Faulty high-limit thermostat

The high-limit thermostat regulates temperature and shuts off the heat if the dryer gets too hot. A failed thermostat can prevent the dryer from heating at all, even when temperatures are normal.

5. Clogged dryer vent

A severely blocked vent can cause the thermal fuse to blow repeatedly. If your thermal fuse keeps blowing, the real culprit is usually a clogged vent restricting airflow. Larry always checks the vent when diagnosing heat issues.

What to Do

Don't run your dryer repeatedly hoping it will start heating — this can cause additional damage. Call Larry at (805) 253-2434. Most no-heat dryer repairs are completed same-day and cost a fraction of a new machine.
