Repair or Replace? An Honest Guide From 25 Years in the Field

Larry Bezman repairing an appliance - repair or replace guide

In 25 years of repairing appliances across Simi Valley and Ventura County, Larry Bezman has given this advice thousands of times: sometimes repair is the right call, sometimes replacement is. Here's the honest breakdown — from someone who makes his living on repairs but won't waste your money on one that doesn't make sense.

The General Rule

If the cost of repair is less than 50% of the cost of a comparable new appliance, repair is usually the right choice — especially if the appliance is less than 10 years old and has been reliable.

If repair costs approach or exceed the cost of replacement, or if this is the second or third significant repair in a short period, replacement is likely the smarter investment.

By Appliance Type

Refrigerators

Repair: Most refrigerator problems — compressor start relay, evaporator fan, defrost thermostat, water inlet valve — are well worth repairing. A good refrigerator lasts 15–20 years.
Replace: If the compressor itself has failed on an older, inexpensive unit, replacement may make more sense. For premium brands (Viking, Sub-Zero, Thermador), repair is almost always worth it.

Washers & Dryers

Repair: Most washer and dryer problems — belts, bearings, heating elements, pumps, control boards — are cost-effective to repair. These machines are designed to last 10–15 years.
Replace: If a front-load washer has a drum bearing failure and is more than 12 years old, the economics sometimes favor replacement.

Dishwashers

Repair: Most dishwasher problems are inexpensive to fix — pumps, spray arms, control boards, door latches.
Replace: If the tub is rusting or cracking, replacement is the better call.

Ovens & Ranges

Repair: High-end ranges (Viking, Thermador, Wolf) are almost always worth repairing — they're expensive to replace and built to last decades. Even standard ovens are usually repair-friendly.
Replace: If the range is very old, basic, and requires an expensive control board, replacement may make sense.
