Why Is My Washer Shaking Violently? Common Causes Explained

By Larry Bezman  ·  March 8, 2026  ·  ALB Appliance Repair, Simi Valley CA
Washer shaking violently - causes explained

In 25 years of appliance repair throughout Simi Valley and Ventura County, Larry Bezman has fixed more shaking washers than almost any other problem. It's one of the most common calls he gets — and fortunately, it's usually fixable without replacing the machine.

The Most Common Causes of a Shaking Washer

1. The washer isn't level

This is the first thing Larry checks. All four feet of your washer must be firmly on the floor. If one foot is slightly elevated, the machine will rock during the spin cycle. Most washers have adjustable feet — a simple adjustment that takes five minutes.

2. Worn shock absorbers

Front-loading washers have shock absorbers that dampen drum movement during spinning. When these wear out — usually after 5–8 years of use — the drum swings freely and the machine bangs against the cabinet. You'll often hear a loud thumping or banging during the spin cycle.

3. Damaged drum bearings

Drum bearings support the inner drum as it spins. When they wear out, you'll notice a grinding or rumbling sound along with vibration. This is a more involved repair but still very much worth doing on a good machine.

4. Worn drum support pads

Top-loading washers have support pads under the drum. As these wear down, the drum shifts during agitation, causing the whole machine to move.

5. Overloaded drum

Too much laundry — especially a single heavy item like a comforter — can throw the drum off balance during spinning. Try redistributing the load before calling for service.

When to Call for Repair

If leveling the washer doesn't solve the problem, call Larry at (805) 253-2434. A shaking washer will get worse over time, not better — and the vibration can damage your floor, loosen connections, and eventually cause more expensive problems.

Most washer vibration repairs are completed same-day and cost significantly less than a new machine.
